I’d like to share with you my most recent project “Body Positive Photoshoot” or BPP for short.

February 1-7 is Eating Disorders awareness week. Like many other mental health issues, eating disorders are a taboo subject that is somewhat difficult to talk about. Although it’s gaining awareness, there is still a stigma. I wanted to create something that would bring people together, to allow openness and show unity.

All people involved have previously suffered from eating disorders and have been ever so courageous and brave in order to take part! They have been bold, honest and as open as can be. People that have taken part ranged from 16 years old to 40+

The idea of this project is to show nobody is alone. That recovery IS possible. That Eating Disorders can effect anyone & that it’s not always obvious. People with eating disorders come in every shape and size. A person’s weight or what they do with food is a symptom of much larger issues going on inside of the person.

Unlike an addict who abstains from their substance of choice, a person with an eating disorder must face eating food 3-5 times a day… Every. Single. Day.  Each day can be filled with multiple challenges other people find typical.

The aim here is to stray away from the typical photoshoot that idolises and pinpoints flaws in the human body. How many times have you seen an image that looks unrealistic or photoshopped? Nobody is perfect. All images for this project have been minimally edited. (Cropping, lighting etc). But no retouching of body or skin!

The main goal is to focus on fun. Being goofy. To capture moments that create happiness and capture moments of utter joy.

Everyone involved creates an individual playlist that allows them to boogie, whilst I capture them in the moment, naturally as they are, unapologetically.

It’s hard to be in front of a camera, then to see images of yourself, then to allow to share those images! This shows so much courage and a big step. So thank you all, really!

For anyone that is suffering, or feel like you know someone that may be suffering, don’t be afraid to reach out. There are resources for you. You are not alone. Talk to your doctor, your closest friend, parents, anyone.

“If I didn't regularly have access to other people who were aware of eating disorders and what it felt like to have one, I don't think I would have gotten to where I am.”
